“Places 2” Lesson 6: Blackpool, England.

I know it doesn’t look much like Blackpool but these gorgeous watercolour paintings are studies of decorative wall tiles in the foyer of Blackpool Tower Ballroom. Sadly we weren’t able to take a class trip there as Strictly have it booked out this week. So we just worked from photos instead.😉
Beautiful work everyone! Keeeep painting!

Next week is the last lesson of the current courses but more info on courses for 2025 coming soon!

“Places 2” Lesson 5: Angel of the North, Gateshead, England.

Wow everyone! You really blew me away this week with your fantastic charcoal drawings of Antony Gormley’s sculpture in Gateshead. I think this was a really tough one but you all rose to the challenge once again. Thank you all for always putting in the hard work – it pays off!

“Places 2” Lesson 4: Taj Mahal, India.

This week we created these intricate drawings of this incredible building using biro on a prepared inked background. Lots of impact in the colour and then really subtle details in the drawing. Beautiful pictures folks! You’re all producing some brilliant work in this course. Well done!

We have a week off now but we’ll be back in the classroom again on 4th November with something completely different!

“Places 2” Lesson 3: Bamburgh, Northumberland.

“Places 2” Lesson 3 – Bamburgh.
This week we used charcoal pencil and chalk to create these entwined drawings of a carved stone throne at Bamburgh castle, Northumberland. If you look closely you can see they include the “Beast of Bamburgh”. A mythical creature said to terrorise the villagers in days gone by.

A pretty tricky task this week and you all had to really concentrate to observe the shapes and proportions of all those twisty, turny knots. Brilliant work everyone. You did great!

“Places 2” Lesson 2: Brisbane, Australia.

“Places 2” Lessons 2: Brisbane.
This week we drew from a photo of a very small section of the Brisbane Peace Pagoda in Australia. The carved wooden panelling gave us lots of opportunity to explore different tones with oil pastels and we invented our own colour schemes as we went along.

Aren’t these fab?! Very organic looking and beautiful colours. Well done everyone. Next week – somewhere completely different.

“Places 2” Lesson 1: Singapore.

Welcome back everyone! We kicked off the course with these striking paintings using watercolour pencil. The image we studied was a photograph taken of the Sri Krishnan Temple in little India in Singapore. This very small section was part of a statue of the Hindu god Hanuman.

Well done everyone! It was great to have you all back in the classroom and on my screen (those of you doing the Zoom course).

Beginners Birds Drawing Course – week 6

Hi everyone

For our final lesson in the Beginners Birds Drawing Course we painted these glorious goldfinches using Derwent Inktense Blocks. Quite a difficult medium to master I think but a lot of fun. Thanks to everyone who has attended this term and well done on producing such great work every week no matter what challenges I threw at you.

No definite dates for future face to face classes at the moment but there are plenty of tutorials available on my Patreon page and remember you can sign up for a free trial using the following link:

Beginners Birds Drawing Course – week 5

Hi folks

Welcome back after our little break.

This week we tried something a bit different and did some timed drawings of Blue Tits ranging from 15 minutes to 30 seconds, followed by a longer drawing. This helps to train us into making quick decisions about the most important aspects of the drawing. Soft pastel was perfect for making quick marks and smudges of colour. Great work everyone! Well done.

See you next week

Beginners Birds Drawing Course – week 4

Hi everyone

This week we drew these beautiful bullfinches using oil pastel. We focused a lot on colour mixing especially in the background and the grey feathers of the bird, only using black where we really needed it. Great work everyone!

We have a week off next week for the bank holiday but I’ll see you back in class on Monday 13th May.

Cheerio!
