Start date: Tuesday 16th May 2023 – this course will run for 5 weeks.
Price:
 £25
Closing date:  11th May 2023

In this course we will look at different works of art and use them as inspiration for our own artwork creations.  This may mean recreating all or part of a picture or simply using it as reference for our own ideas and interpretation. This course is designed for beginners but would be suitable for all abilities.

Materials

The course will explore a range of different media including watercolour, oil pastel, soft pastel, etc.  Alternative media suggestions will be given for each lesson, so if you don’t have the specific materials used in the example, you will still be able to have a go at the tasks.  The bare minimum you will need for the course is a pencil and something to create colour.  A full list of materials used in the lessons will be included in the booking details. Please note:  you do not need to have completed any of the previous “Inspired” courses in order to join this course.  All courses are stand alone courses.

All classes will be taught by myself, Wendy Atton B A (Hons).   If you would like to view my work please visit my website at http://www.wendyatton.co.uk or Instagram@wendyatton_artist.  Please note that places cannot be reserved without full payment and all fees are non-refundable in part or in full.

The online courses only are free to any NHS employees as a thank you for just being wonderful.  Just send me a photo of your staff card when you book.

If you have any questions or would like to book a place please get in touch by either email:leedsartgroup@yahoo.co.uk or telephone: 07788 871286 or use our “Contact” page.  Payment can be made by bank transfer or cheque.  If you already have my online payment details please use the correct reference when booking and please drop me an email when you have paid so that I can confirm receipt and book you on the correct class.

Online lesson format

Lessons

The lessons will be delivered via a 30 minute online live chat/demonstration in which I will explain each task and you will be able to ask any questions.  We will use “Zoom”, an online web conferencing program and you will be sent a link on how to download this with your booking confirmation.  Zoom is free and you don’t need to set up an account.  You will be sent a link before the start of the course which can be used each week to take you straight to the lesson.

Recorded video

Following the lesson you will also receive a link to a 30 minute recorded video of the whole picture being created by myself from start to finish in time lapse together with instructions along the way.

Information sheets

I will also email you an information sheet following the lesson with step by step instructions on how to create the picture.

Feedback/advice

Once you have produced your picture I would be happy to receive any photos of your work via email, text or WhatsApp and would gladly offer any advice or feedback that you might require.

Showing off

At Leeds Art Group we do like to show off our wonderful creations!  So if you send me a photo of your work there’s a good chance I will put it on our website or our Instagram page @leedsartgroup.  If you’d prefer me not to do this, just let me know.  Or if you’d prefer to do your own showing off then you can join the Leeds Art Group WhatsApp group so that you can all post your masterpieces on there whenever you like and see what the rest of the group are doing.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Online courses – week 1

Hi everyone

The new term of online courses has started and of course we had to kick it off with some Easter eggs. These designs for Ukrainian Pysanky eggs were created in watercolour pencil by the “Inspired 3” Online beginners art course. In the “Pencil and Paper” Online beginners drawing course we took breakfast as our inspiration. Great start to the courses everyone, well done.

Below are some of this week’s pictures and you can see more on our Instagram page at: @leedsartgroup.

Bye for now

Courses – week 7

Hi folks

This week was our final lesson in the “Animal 2” Beginners Mixed Media Course and we finished in flamboyant style with these magnificent peacock paintings! We used Derwent Inktense Blocks for the main painting with some charcoal pencil for the details. What a great way to finish the course. Thanks for all your fantastic artwork this term. More classes coming soon!

Courses – week 6

Hi everyone

Lovely leopards were our subject this week in the “Animal 2” Beginners Mixed Media Course. We used a prepared paper painted with an acrylic wash to create the colour element of the picture. Then used black drawing ink with a dip pen and white Posca pen to add the tone. Such a gorgeous animal and you all did it justice. Well done!

If you want to see a video of my leopard drawing with full instructions then sign up to my Patreon page by clicking on the following link. There are also 7 more videos to watch with at least 2 new posts every month.

Courses – week 5

Hi everyone

In the “Animal 2” Beginners Mixed Media Course we drew these beautiful peacock butterflies using soft pastel. A very messy medium but you can create some lovely colourful effects. In the final lesson of the “Inspired 2” online course we looked at the work of Edgar Degas, also using soft pastel and focusing on subtle colour mixing. In the “Pencil & Paper 3” online drawing course we used everything we’ve learned so far in the course and drew it all in one box. Brilliant work everyone, well done! Shame this is the last week of the online courses for now but more coming soon!

Courses – week 4

Hi folks

This week the “Animal 2” Beginners Mixed Media Course created these colourful cows using oil pastel and really experimented with colour mixing. In the “Inspired 2” online course we celebrated (a little belatedly) Chinese New Year using watercolour and other media including collage, to make fabulous patterned paintings. The “Pencil & Paper 3” online drawing course had one of the hardest subjects to draw this week – reflective objects. So well done for rising to the challenge. Great work everyone, well done!

See you soon

New Patreon page launch!

Hi everyone

I’ve created a new video channel using Patreon where you can view my instruction videos and other arty things.  If you haven’t heard of Patreon it’s a bit like Youtube but you pay a monthly subscription fee and you can view the content anytime you like.  The videos will be available permanently and you can watch them as many times as you like.  There are currently 6 videos posted and I’ll be making at least 2 new posts every month.  I’ll be trialing this for the next few months to see if there is enough demand for this.  So if you want to support it then click on the link at the bottom of this email.  Here’s what you can expect from your subscription:

  • Exclusive content available to Patrons only that you won’t have seen in any of the Leeds Art Group online courses.
  • Video tutorials & lessons.
  • Sketchbook tours – have a flick through some of my sketchbooks with me.
  • Time lapse videos and real time instruction videos.
  • Reference images where possible.
  • Hints and tips on using a variety of different media and different subjects.
  • Materials lists.
  • Time lapse videos of my own commission work (including the little terrier portrait below).
  • At least 2 new posts every month.
  • Unlimited access to all my videos and posts anytime, as many times as you like.

If that all sounds good and you want to join then just click on the link below and it will take you to the membership page.  Then click on “Join” and follow the instructions.

Patreon takes payment when you join and after that on the 1st of each month.  You can unsubscribe at any time.

If you have any questions then please get in touch.  Also, if you’ve decided to join and there’s something you’d like to see on Patreon then let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

Hope you can join me.

Courses – week 3

Hi everyone

For week 3 of the “Animal 2” Beginners Mixed Media Course it was time to get messy with charcoal. A great medium for creating texture and there was plenty of it on these amazing iguanas! Not wanting to be left out, the “Inspired 2” online course also used charcoal to create some fantastic, delicate drawings based on the photography of Karl Blossfeldt. The “Pencil & Paper 3” online drawing course used everything we’ve practiced so far to produce drawings of bags, focusing on tone, shape and shading. Such beautiful drawings everyone. Hope you’re all enjoying our little break this week. Looking forward to seeing all your pictures again when we’re back in class next week.

Below are some of this week’s pictures and you can see more on our Instagram page at: @leedsartgroup.

See you soon
